$2 brews make the scene on Divisadero Street

It’s now possible for drinkers to spend less than a Hamilton—that’s $10
in recession parlance—during a typical happy hour on Divisadero Street.

The $2 beer, even including some microbrews, is now available at no less than six bars
and cafés within five blocks of each other on San Francisco’s Divisadero Street, between Page and Fulton Streets.

The epicenter of the trend is Bean Bag Café (601 Divisadero St, S.F.), or Scene Bag, as locals refer to this too-cool-by-half coffee shop. It started selling microbrews—whole pints of them!—for $1.23 back in 2000 and has slowly worked its way up to $1.75, spawning competitors all along the way, including one that opened as recently as October.

This trend has been great for the Bean Bag, which has regular sit-down food service, but some of the places that have been forced to lower their beer prices aren’t so happy about it.

“You’re not losing money when you sell beer for two bucks—but you’re not making money, either,” says David Robb, cofounder of Mojo Bicycle Café (639-A Divisadero Street, S.F.), which peddles $2 brewskies a couple of doors down from the Bean Bag and offers only a limited menu. “For that, it should
be three bucks a pint.”

Still, business can’t be too bad if prices like these continue to bring
in customers. And now that the area has its own name (Divisadero Corridor, or DivCo for short), it’s got the cachet to keep ’em coming
