Do Good Now: Crushpad
In the midst of a recession, Michael Brill discovered an unusual source of new business. It started when Brill, the founder and CEO of Crushpad Winery (where well-to-do winos can make their own blends) noticed that nonprofits have been increasingly desperate for donations. A bleeding heart who happened to be sitting on a mountain of wine, Brill decided to pair good grapes with good deeds: In August, he launched Crushpad’s fundraising program. Here’s how it works: Crushpad sets up an online wine store for your organization, you select bottles of preblended or custom-blended wines and promote them among your constituents. Crushpad handles the sales of your unique blend and sends you a percentage of the proceeds, usually $6 to $10 per bottle. Crushpad keeps the rest, while your donors receive a bottle of wine and a reserved spot on Santa’s “nice” list.
